Give yourself a higher chance of success with a disability claim

| Jun 14, 2019 | Firm News |

When a Washington individual is unable to work due to a disability injury or medical condition, it can be disheartening for that person and his or her family. Being unable to earn a living directly impacts things like paying for medical care and other important things. If you find yourself in this situation, you understand first-hand how difficult this situation can be.

You probably know that you could have a valid claim to disability benefits from the Social Security Administration. What you may not know is where to start with this process or how you can prove you have an actual disability. The claims process can be complex, and it’s in your interests to learn as much as you can about what to expect and how you can give yourself a higher chance of success with your claim.

What do you need to apply?

The SSA does not give benefits to every person who has a serious illness or grave injury. They have strict definitions of what kinds of things qualify as genuinely disabling conditions. An applicant must have a condition that prevents him or her from continuing with the same job or finding another job. There must also be evidence that the medical condition is permanent or will last at least one year. Some of these things you will need to include to prove eligibility:

  • Reports from all of the doctors you see for treatment of your condition
  • Test results, information about your medication and lab results
  • Information and documents from hospital stays and doctor visits
  • Documentation pertaining to your work and how your condition impacted your ability to continue working

Applying for benefits is a lengthy process, and many initial applications come back denied. If this happens to you, it is not the end of the road. You have the right to appeal or request a reconsideration of your claim, but sometimes, including additional documentation will be necessary.

Starting the right way

Mistakes with the initial application are some of the main reasons why disability applications come back denied. If you want to avoid problems and missteps, you will find it beneficial to start by speaking with an experienced Washington Social Security attorney. This will allow you to proceed in the right way and may even give you a better chance of a successful claim. There is a lot at stake, but you do not have to walk through the process alone.
