Exploding cooking spray can brings another personal injury claim

Defective household products threaten the safety of consumers nationwide, including in Washington state. An example is Pam cooking spray cans that have exploded and caused personal injury to victims in several states. At least six lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of the product.

One plaintiff claims that an exploding cooking spray container caused second-degree burns all over his hands and arms. He claims to have accumulated medical bills exceeding $60,000, which was exacerbated by the fact that he lost his job due to the time it took to recover. This plaintiff asserts that the cooking spray was used in a normal kitchen environment.

Another injured victim says a similar explosion left her with burns that caused disfigurement, scarring, lung damages and even blindness in one of her eyes. She claims that the scarring led to her losing her job. Some of the Pam cooking spray cans were made with pressure release openings, which is alleged to be the defect that causes unexpected explosions.

Reportedly, the manufacturer claims that millions of consumers have safely used Pam cooking sprays for over 50 years. However, it admitted to having discontinued the cans produced with the pressure release openings. Although the cans have clear warning signs, legal counsel for the plaintiffs say the warning not to keep the cooking spray near a heat source is too vague to provide protection.

Victims of injuries caused by defective or malfunctioning products in Washington state might be unsure about their legal rights. An experienced personal injury attorney can assist with an initial assessment to determine the viability of a civil lawsuit. If sufficient grounds exist, the lawyer can help with documenting negligence and navigating the ensuing legal proceedings. If such a claim is successfully presented, financial and emotional damages can be recovered.
