About Carl Maxey
Born in 1924, Carl grew up in the Inland Northwest, eventually
attending Gonzaga High School. After serving in the Army during
World War II, Carl returned to Spokane and attended Gonzaga
University's law school on a boxing scholarship. In 1950,
Carl was crowned the NCAA light-heavyweight boxing national
champion and helped lead Gonzaga University to its first ever
national championship in any sport.
Upon graduating from college, Carl became the first African-American in Spokane’s history to pass the bar exam. Spanning a legal career of over 40 years, Carl earned a well deserved reputation as an exceptional trial lawyer and a nationally-recognized civil rights leader. In his latter years Carl achieved wealth, success and notoriety, but never lost his focus on civil rights or defense of the common man. Today, Maxey Law is proud to be the law firm dedicated to our founder’s values of: Integrity, Equality and Justice.
